Senior Style Guide - What to wear

What to Wear, Style Guide, Outfit Planning, Photoshoot

Listen up ladies!

Senior sessions are such a perfect time to flaunt WHO you are and, often times, we show the world that in the way we dress! You shouldn't be coming to your session dressed as someone you ARE NOT, but rather ready to state this is me! That being said, you want to be the best version of you, so keep that in mind as you are picking out the perfect outfit(s) for your senior photoshoot.

Are prints and patterns okay? -

Let's talk patterns! Most photographers are going to tell you to avoid busy patterns on your clothes because it is/can be distracting from the focal point of the photo (you, my dear, you)! I personally think that patterns are not the end of the world, when done correctly. Simple patterns, dainty florals, leopard print, and muted tones are a great way to get patterns into your outfit without it taking away from you. Location depending, big bold patterns can absolutely compliment an overall look.... I mean look at the beautiful Rayn in the sunflower photo! The trick there was that the overall area (her mini dress) of the bold pattern was small. If you want to wear a t-shirt with your all time favorite band/show/team on it, I see nothing wrong with that - make sure it FITS you well and is clean.

How can I quickly change my outfit?

Let's talk hats!! You can take your fall and/or winter photoshoot outfit from dressy to casual just by throwing on a beanie or other form of winter hat! Other hats, like cowboy hats, flat brimmed hats, fedoras, and baseball caps are super easy to throw on. Even if you're not a "hat person," I still recommend bringing one of these, just in case (don't ever underestimate that power of a hat against the wind).

Let's talk jackets! You can never go wrong bringing a top layer for your outfits. It is the quickest way to change up your outfit without messing up your hair and in the colder months it adds a layer of warmth that you'll appreciate. You can wear a jacket shrugged off your shoulders, slung over one shoulder, hanging over your shoulders. If it has a collar, you can pop it. I will never tell you that a jacket is a bad thing to bring to your senior session. You can use a simple kimono, a cardigan, or even a suit jacket! We're not limited to your letterman jacket (even though that is definitely a good one to bring).

Should I dress up or keep it casual?

My friend - at the end of the day, I want you to feel comfortable in whatever outfit you choose to wear to your Senior photoshoot. This is a day that is all about you. My advice is to pick something that you would consider dressed up and something you would consider your every day look, then bring BOTH. Again - if you're packing accessories with you, you can change up your overall vibe in the blink of an eye. I'm not going to lie to you and say that I don't get super excited when my senior girls want to wear a formal dress to their session, because I totally love it! We can capture all kinds of beautiful movement when you wear a flowy dress to your session. But you know what - we can do that if you're in a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, too! It's truly up to you!

In case you're wondering, I bring a portable changing room with me to my photoshoots. You don't have to change your clothes awkwardly in your car or wrapped up in a blanket when you're with me.

At the end of the day.....

I just want you to be happy, feel confident, and celebrate this beautiful time in your life! You deserve to feel special and this time deserves to be documented in photographs! The tradition of getting dressed in cute outfits and taking senior photos has been around for a long time because it is definitely worth it! Come as you are, come as your favorite version of yourself, and let's have fun!
